Elephant Conservation Projects In India

In order to ensure elephant's long-term healthy life in the natural habitat, elephant conservation project called Gajtme was launched by the Central Government in the year 1992 in the states having sufficient population of elephants, which was launched from Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The elephant project is currently underway in 16states Under this project, 32 Elephant Reserves have been declared, which is extended in about 70 thousand square kilometers.

  • The Union Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Government of India has declared elephant as a National Heritage Animal on 22 October 2010 to promote efforts to preserve the future of elephants in India.
  • On 12 August 2017, the preliminary results of the First-Ever Synchronised All India Elephant Population Estimation were released by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change According to this the total number of elephants in India has been recorded 27,312. The highest number of elephants in the country has been recorded in the state of Karnataka (6,049). After this, Assam
